We’ve had too many concepts, two few actual horsepower and a long time to think about the Toyobaru sportscars, but it won’t be long now. The Toyota FT-86 has already been leaked, and the BRZ isn’t much o mystery, but it’s the way the thing handles that’s important, not if it’s better looking than a Jaguar E-Type.
Subaru unveiled the first true concept version of their RWD model (that doesn’t have a transparent body) at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, where the BRZ STI Concept was dropped. Now, a production-spec version is getting ready for its unveil in Tokyo, where we’ll be taking a closer look to see if Subuaru really can pull of a rear-wheel drive car.
However, there’s also a US-market debut to consider, which according to SubaruBRZForum.com will take place at the beginning of next year, during the 2011 North American International Auto Show in January 2012.
To be honest, we don’t really know what sort of differences US-spec models will feature compared to those sold in the rest of the world. However, the European version is supposed to have a full 213 hp coming from its 2.0-liter boxer engine. This is enough for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint time of 6.0 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h).
What we do know is that the base BRZ is expected in Spring 2012 for $25,300, so we might have a while to wait a bit for the STI.
