Toyota has released full details about the new Yaris Hybrid-R Concept, scheduled to be shown to the public next week at the IAA in Frankfurt.
The concept car combines the idea behind the Yaris Hybrid road car with high-performance engineering inspired by Toyota's racing TS030 Le Mans prototype. The result is a concept like no other, compact and very powerful.
At the heart of the 3-door concept is powered by a 1.6-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine making 300 horsepower. This was developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) according to the rules of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) for a Global Race Engine. 300 hp is the limit imposed on WRC, as to what that actually means, we'll leave the educated guesswork up to you.
The Yaris Hybrid-R also has a couple of electric motors at the back, each producing 120 hp, only available for five seconds at a time as a sort of overboost function.
But that's not the interesting part. In between the 1.6-liter engine and the gearbox is another 60 hp eletrctric motor which regenerates the capacitor while the car is slowing and powers the rear motors when output from the engine exceeds the limit of traction. Basically, it's like a transfer case that uses electricity instead of actual driveshafts. That doesn't make much sense until you realize this 420 hp car is actually riding on 18-inch TRD wheels with 225/40 tires. Be they wrapped in Michelin sticky tires, they're still no wider than on an Auris.
