The new Toyota sportscar project is steeped in mystery. We know that it should be a hybrid, maybe even all-wheel drive. We know that BMW might be offering them a little help and that it will sit above the GT 86, but that's about it.
We don't know exactly how he drivetrain will pan out or what kind of power we can expect. Although it's a logical move for the Japanese carmaker, we don't know either if it will have the Supra name.
In a recent interview with Car Advice in Canberra, Tatsuya Tada, the chief engineer for the Toyobaru project revealed the Supra name might be used. The famous Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda, who is pushing for both collaboration with BMW and development of this flagship Toyota vehicle loves the Supra name.
"Akio has very strong feelings about Supra and all the engineers [have] strong feelings about Supra.” Tada told CarAdvice. “Mr Toyoda said to me that if you want to call it Supra it has to be superior, it has to be super great sports car. Unless it’s a great sports car it wouldn’t be called Supra."
Of course, that doesn't guarantee the Supra name will be used. But considering how many owners are still keeping theirs on the road, tuning them to extreme 1000 hp outputs, it'd be a shame not to.
