Japanese automaker Toyota is considering a smaller rear-wheel drive sportscar that would sit below the recently-developed GT 86 model.
According to Tatsuya Tada, the man in charge with the company's sportscar division, Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda says the automaker needs to slot two new rear-wheel drive sportscars above and below the GT 86. "Akio Toyoda always says to me, Toyota sports car [family] should be three sports car brothers. 86 is in the middle," Tada told Car Advice.
While Toyota has yet to approve the new projects, Tada claims there's a good chance they will be developed in the near future: "Toyota has learnt a lot from 86 project and Toyota has much experience in terms of technology and development in the way we develop vehicles efficiently and cost effectively. We have all these experiences and skills."
The larger of the two cars, also known as the Supra successor, is currently being jointly-developed with BMW. The smaller one, also likely to be a joint effort, could arrive as a new MR2 or Celica.
