All the major Japanese automakers have achieved a firm footing in Europe, not just through the sale of their cars, but also through local production. One of Toyota’s key factories in Europe, the UK-based Brunaston plant has now commenced production of the all-new Auris, a car specifically designed for the European market.
The plant will make both the Auris hatchback and the Touring Sports (estate) model, at the UK plant, which required £185- (€230-) million in investments to retool and prepare, as well as the hiring of 800 workers, all of whom have been included in Toyota’s production apprenticeship programs.
Didier Leroy, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe was present at the opening ceremony, and stated the following: “Toyota chose the UK as the location for its first manufacturing centre in Europe 20 years ago and has regularly made significant investments to develop TMUK’s operations and expand their capabilities [. . .] New Auris is at the heart of our European strategy and we expect it to strengthen our sales performance in the family car market. It is a unique proposition in its segment in being offered with petrol, diesel and full hybrid power in both the hatchback and new Touring Sports estate versions.”
