Tomorrow, the workers at Toyota’s Altona plant in Australia will put their tools down for a 21-day holiday shutdown, the longest one among all the other automaker’s plants around the world.
Following the decisions of Ford and Holden to end local production, Toyota too is considering closing its plant in Altona due to the local suppliers that will be forced to close their businesses.
As a saving strategy for the plant, Toyota asked its workers to accept reduced conditions. By comparison, the plant in Japan which competes with the Australian one will shut for only five days over the New Year. The longest shutdown so far registered 10 days.
