Toyota injects record investment in battery plant in the US. The automotive giant has just announced an investment of nearly $8 billion at the battery plant in North Carolina. The move comes with 3,000 new jobs.
With the new $8 billions, the total investment made by Toyota in the North Carolina production center goes all the way to approximately $13.9 billion. The move is designed to increase the capacity to support the manufacturing of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

Eight more BEV/PHEV production lines will operate alongside the two that were previously announced. Consequently, approximately 3,000 new jobs will be available at Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina, with a total of more than 5,000. The company is already looking for personnel and asks people interested to apply for the open positions by submitting their CVs on the official website.

The facility will increase production in phases. The ten lines will reach a total production of more than 30 GWh per year by 2030. Toyota is thus trying to prove commitment to electrification and carbon reduction.

Back in 2021, when Toyota announced the new Liberty location, it all started with an investment of $1.29 billion for battery production and 1,750 new jobs. With the new investment, Toyota North Carolina becomes one of the most important and largest lithium-ion battery production centers in North America. The campus covers seven million square feet, which is the equivalent of 121 football fields.

Over the years, Toyota has sent more than 24.6 million hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell and battery electric cars on the roads worldwide. Butt the carmaker was late at the EV party, first betting on hybrids like the pioneering Prius and on hydrogen-fuel cell powertrains with the Mirai.

The first electric car rolled out by Toyota was the bZ4x compact crossover, which entered production in April 2022. Built on the e-TNGA platform, the model is marketed on the local market in Japan, as well as the US, Canada, Europe, and China. The bZ4x can be ordered with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, depending on the powertrain selected by the customer: a single-motor or a dual-motor layout.

The bZ4x should be just the beginning, if everything goes according to plan for Toyota. The carmaker plans to have an electrified variant for every model in the lineup globally, Lexus included. The investment in the North Carolina facility is supposed to help Toyota rev up the push to electrify the entire portfolio. Toyota is trying to close the gap with the leading EV makers, Tesla and BYD.

North Carolina is obviously emerging as a leading hub for electric vehicle and battery manufacturing. To show involvement in the community, Toyota also donated up to $200,000 to local nonprofits and education initiatives.
