The 86 might be an old design, but it’s fun nonetheless and a unique proposition in the segment thanks to the Subaru boxer engine. As ever, the Hachi-Roku soldiers on with an option that defeats the purpose in a sports car – namely the six-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter.
If you prefer (and you should prefer) the six-speed manual, make that $26,985 before destination charge. An option that benefits the driving experience is the TRD Handling Package, adding $2,320 to the sticker.

The question is, what does Toyota Racing Development bring new to the party? First of all, look forward to chassis improvements from the TRD Special Edition for the 2019 model year. These include ventilated disc brakes from Brembo measuring 12.83 and 12.44 inches, SACHS dampers, 18-inch alloy wheels with a split-spoke design, and a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.

Go-faster upgrades are complemented by a 7.0-inch Multimedia Audio interface with a touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, eight speakers, Bluetooth media streaming, Clari-Fi technology, and buttons on the steering wheel. Looking at the bigger picture, it’s obvious that even the entry-level 86 with the TRD pack is an enticing sports car.

Customers in the market for a bit more comfort can level up to the GT trim level, which adds heated seats, an alarm, underbody aerodynamic panel, LED fog lamps, matte-black rear wing with color-keyed end plates, power and heated mirrors, leather bolsters and Granlux suede inserts, the whole nine yards. The 4.2-inch TFT information display is exclusive to the 86 GT.

At the very top of the range if the 86 Hakone Edition, a special model that takes its name from the Hakone Skyline highway. The green paintwork and bronze wheels certainly look the part, and the interior is beautiful in its own right thanks to black and tan-colored Alcantara with colored stitching.

The business end of the 2020 Toyota 86 remains the good ol’ boxer with 2.0 liters of displacement, packing 205 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 156 pound-feet at 6,400 rpm. Auto-equipped models are artificially limited to 200 ponies and 151 torques, and as a side note, the engine’s bore and stroke measure 86 millimeters.
