According to the Austrian official, playing the experienced versus rookie card in a Formula One outfit hasn't worked the way it was supposed to at Faenza, therefore there would be no logic in going back to that strategy next season. Following the Sebastien Bourdais fiasco, the team now employs 2 young drivers: 21-year old Sebastien Buemi and 19-year old Jaime Alguersuari.
Both drivers are debutants in this year's Formula One championship, yet the team seems very happy with how they've performed so far.
“We had to give up our original plan of having an experienced driver with a beginner, because Buemi was too far ahead of the Frenchman (Bourdais). Now Red Bull has again made Toro Rosso a school for the new generation,” said Tost in an interview with the Swiss newspaper Blick.
In addition, Tost praised Buemi for his incredible maturity in dealing with the situations that arose during his first Formula One season, and hinted that only 3 years from now we'll get to see his true value as a racer. Until then, the STR principal advised his employee to take failures easier in the sport.
“First he had Bourdais under control in qualifying. Now on Saturdays, as was the case in Singapore, he is always clearly faster than Jaime Alguersuari. His most important strength is his excellent basic speed, as well as his attitude towards the job. It's a shame he puts too much pressure on himself and is too easily disappointed.”
“Buemi has to accept that the development process of a formula one driver takes three years,” concluded Tost.
