Tony George Steps Down as IMS CEO

Hulman & Company and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway board of directors announced June 30 a new team of management will replace former CEO Tony George as of July 1. Tony George was an important figure in the US motor sport history, as his grandfather Tony Hulman brought the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the end of World War II. Tony is a former racing driver and founded the Indy Racing League. He resigned on June 30 from the position of CEO of IMS, Indy Racing League and of Hulman & Company.

The new management is comprised of long time IMS executives W. Curtis Brighton and Jeffrey G. Belskus, who were hired in the past by Tony George. Tony is regarded as the man who brought Formula 1 back in the states with the race on the Indy 500 oval and was looking to get into Formula 1 again as he was in talks with Bernie Ecclestone. But his changes to the oval to host an F1 GP at IMS, including investments to the road course, press tower and other facilities, brought him local criticism.

Our board had asked Tony to structure our executive staff to create efficiencies in our business structure and to concentrate his leadership efforts in the Indy Racing League” said Mari Hulman George, Tony's mother and IMS chairman of the board.

While some speculate Americans want to keep their racing series American, Mari Hulman George said that “he (Tony George) has decided that with the recent unification of open-wheel racing and the experienced management team IMS has cultivated over the years, now would be the time for him to concentrate on his team ownership of Vision Racing with his family and other personal business interests he and his family share."

During the FOTA-FIA conflict, the leaked calender for a 2010 break-away series included both the Indianapolis and Montreal venues to host Gps. Now things look shady for Ferrari which only this week regarded as being of absolutely critical importance returning to race in North American continent. Luca di Motezemolo continued saying “the United States has been our largest market for many, many years and so we will do our best to race there again with formula one”.
