Tony George Quits IMS Board Completely

Tony George decided that he had enough with the Indy Racing League – a business that he actually founded and led for the past two decades – and yesterday confirmed that he has given up all official positions within the board of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Following the IMS' hosting Formula One races in the early 2000s, his decisions at the helm of North America's leading open-wheel racing series have been contested by the members of the IRL and IMS board continuously. All dissatisfactions burst during the course of this summer, when the Hulman & Company and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway board of directors decided to replace him because of his large amount of investments into the IMS facility.

However, until this week, George had agreed to remain in the management board of his family companies, bringing his contribution in restructuring the series and guiding it through these difficult economic times.

When announcing his decision to quit his position within the board – and focusing on running his IRL team Vision Racing – his mother and chairman of the IMS Mari Hulman George could not hide her disappointment.

As members of his family, we are sorry to see Tony leave. We are grateful for his service to our company as a board member and of course for formerly serving as CEO and president of our companies. I speak for our whole family in wishing him well,” said George.

All of us had hoped that Tony would continue to serve on the board, and we made that clear to him. We are disappointed with his decision to step down despite our wishes,” added the IMS chairman.
