Navigation solution provider TomTom has developed, together with Toyota Australia, somewhat similar with the one developed for Toyota Europe. Called FollowMe, the new application is both a navigation tool and communication/entertainment gadget.
FollowMe has one neat advantage over your every day GPS: it follows you (hence, the name...). Once it has completed its in-car business and took you to your destination, the system can be detached an turned into a portable unit. A trait useful from more than one perspectives...
First, it prevents theft and secondly, it can be fitted onto another car. Just like any other GPS. One of the differences however is that this one can playback CDs, DVDs, MP3/iPod, iPhone and WMA files.
Not to mention in can support several video and photo formats, which can be seen on the 4 inch display. The two modules of the system (the GPS and the CD player) work separately, so when the former is removed, the latter can still be operated.
FollowMe gets updated by Australia's Suna traffic monitoring services. The unit has voice recognition capabilities and can also play back, in voice, text messages received. It also can be paired with a rear-view camera to display images of what is happening behind the vehicle.
FollowMe uses a built-in gyroscope, as well as an accelerometer to more accurately report the position, heading and speed of the vehicle. This is particularly useful in tunnels, as the system will continue to operate even without satellite up-link.
