Michelin is recognized as a leading company in the world of automotive mobility, by providing cutting-edge tire technology, as well as numerous other innovations in the field. This year Goodwood Festival of Speed will be the venue where the French brand is showcasing its new “Michelin Active Wheel” technology.
The system is relatively straightforward and it features a normal wheel which houses two electric motors, one being used to rotate the wheel, as well as brake, while the other is used to give whatever vehicle the “Active Wheel” is fitted to, a kind of active suspension system.

Each wheel can provide around 40 hp and it drastically simplifies classic automotive suspension systems, as well as doing away with complicated gearboxes and drive shafts. We also expect the suspension to be fully adjustable for stiffness, as well as height, though the latter may pose some problems as there isn’t that much space for the in-wheel mechanisms to move.

We honestly can’t wait to see this system fitted to an actual car, as we think that it is easily one of the most ingenious new automotive inventions we’ve seen in a long time. It could dramatically simplify car building techniques, as well as reduce the associated costs, bringing us affordable and technologically advanced EVs.
