Many people, myself included, want to start van life on a budget, which can be challenging. One option is choosing the DIY path and building a camper van yourself, provided you have the right skills. Employing the services of a specialized company is typically an expensive option, so that's out of the question. There is one more option: going for a budget-friendly, fully installed van build – one company that offers this is Timber Van Kits.
Timber Van Kits is a project developed by the team at Titan Vans. Its mission is to empower DIYers and camper van conversion enthusiasts to create high-quality, durable components suitable for the rigors of van life.

The company provides products for three van models, which are, in fact, the most popular for conversions: Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, and Ram ProMaster. Moreover, you can choose a complete van conversion kit, a less expensive full DIY van kit if you want to set everything up yourself, or you can buy components independently to complete your project.

Today, we're checking out a full conversion kit installed on Dr. Hannah Straight's van, a 2023 144" wheelbase high-roof Mercedes Sprinter. But before we do that, let's take a look at the price points for these products.

If you choose a fully installed van build, pricing starts at $24,575 (€22,476). What do you get for that? Some of the most important features include a complete off-grid electrical system, a water system with fresh and gray tanks, a kitchen, and a bedroom, as well as paneling, insulation, flooring, and cabinetry.

Then, there's the full DIY van, which starts at $15,995 (€14,629). The company's website says that this option is coming soon and will include free shipping and a detailed installation/assembly guide. From what I can understand, you get the same features; you only have to set them up yourself.

There are many upgrades available for both packs. For instance, you can add better power stations, other finishes, a ceiling fan, a heater, and more. Hannah opted for the first option of a fully installed kit and chose various upgrades. This brought the price of her vehicle's conversion to around $39,000 (€35,669).

You'll notice Hannah's van is equipped with an off-road suspension and rides on all-terrain tires. But besides these two elements, the rig is pretty standard, missing the typical bike carrier, front bumper with a winch, and other accessories we typically encounter on camper vans.

Once inside, you'll find a simply decorated space that prioritizes practicality. The ceiling and panels are made of Baltic Birch and insulated with 30-mm D-Mat synthetic insulation. Timber Van Kits offers two options: you can go for a finished look, meaning the company will wrap the ceiling and panels in gray tweed, or choose the unfinished look, allowing you to add your own aesthetic touch to the Baltic Birch. The kit also comes with Baltic Birch flooring, covered in a single sheet of coin dot flooring.

Right as you enter, you'll notice the kitchen straight ahead. It features a decently sized countertop with an integrated stainless steel sink and a 34-gallon (130-liter) Isotherm fridge with a tiny freezer, which is only offered as an upgrade.

All the water you use is drained in two six-gallon (23-liter) gray water containers underneath the sink. Moreover, there are two massive overhead cabinets for storage. For cooking, you'll have to use a portable induction stove that can be connected to one of the outlets in the kitchen. You'll also notice a water pump switch, USB outlets, and controls for a Webasto Evo 40 diesel heater, which is housed underneath the passenger seat.

One of the best features of Hannah's camper is the bed, which can be set up in two ways. You can keep it small if you need additional storage space, but if you want the best level of comfort, you can transform it by pulling a wooden extension and rearranging the cushions. In the latter arrangement, you get around 75 inches (191 centimeters) in length and 65 inches (165 centimeters) in width.

When sitting on the bed, you're in reach of other bedroom features. There are some light switches, two outlets, and two USB outlets, as well as two cubbies on the opposite side. Furthermore, the manufacturers installed two awning windows with bug screens on the sides and a ceiling Maxxair fan.

Whichever setup you choose, you get a bunch of storage space under it in the garage. There's enough room to fit bikes, kayaks, skis, suitcases, and more. There are additional storage spots on both sides: three cabinets and four enormous cubbies.

On the driver's side of the garage, you'll find a 20-gallon (76-liter) freshwater tank with a fill line that allows you to check how much water you've got left. On the opposite side, the manufacturers fitted the electrical system, which consists of a Yeti 3000 power station. That's an upgrade Hannah chose, as the standard version of the van kit comes with a Yeti 1500 power station.

These power stations provide both AC and DC power and can be charged via the alternator or via solar panels. Timber Van Kits offers two 100 W solar panels on the roof. Other notable components of the electrical system are a power box and a dimmer light system.

There's enough space to access the garage from the inside. However, if you exit the vehicle and open the two rear doors, you'll discover some extra features integrated into the rear part of the garage's cabinetry. There's another water pump switch, a wash-down system perfect for washing off your feet, bikes, wetsuits, and others.

And that's about it with Hannah's camper van. All in all, Timber Van Kits offers a well-designed layout with the essentials for living on the road (except for the fridge and heater, which are extras) and a bunch of storage spaces, all encased in a clean and minimalistic aesthetic.

Even though the $25K price tag is a good enough deal, if you're handy or want to learn to build stuff yourself, you could save up quite a bit by going for the $16K DIY kit. You can learn more about Timber Van Kits' services and products on the company's website.
