Choosing the right podcast app is more difficult than you can imagine, as the app stores on Android and iPhone include a plethora of solutions, each promising the best features.
However, if you study the market closely, you should discover that the number of worthy podcast players is not as big as you believed it was. Castro Podcast Player is often considered an underdog, as it doesn't benefit from the popularity of well-known solutions but still offers an incredible feature package.
I've been using Castro for more than a year, especially because it makes managing podcasts extremely easy. It also sports an Apple Watch application to control the playback and includes a queue that allows you to add new podcasts by simply dragging and dropping new content.
The app has been a great driving companion, thanks to the CarPlay integration, until the latest update broke down the in-vehicle experience completely. Castro continued to crash repeatedly on CarPlay for an unclear reason, and none of the workarounds I tried brought things back to normal.
I also removed and reinstalled the app, but Castro still wasn't working correctly on CarPlay. I even tried playing different podcasts, as I suspected a specific file might be corrupt, triggering a crash when the in-car experience is loaded.
Fortunately, the developing team listened to feedback, and the latest update published on the App Store corrects the issue. Version 2023.15 is now available for download on Apple smartphones, including a fix for the CarPlay crash. I already installed the update, and I can confirm everything is working correctly, with no crashes encountered while using the app in the car.
The new update also resolves a second fix for a New Episode Management selection bug.
If you're a Castro Podcast Player user, you'll almost certainly want to install the latest versions, as they bring plenty of useful features. A previous update that landed in October included an option to automatically sort new podcast episodes into a designated folder, so the management component received a major upgrade. Once you configure the feature and use the app, Castro should add the new episodes to the chosen folders, keeping the files organized on your device.
If you enabled automatic app updates on your iPhone, the chances are the latest fix is already available on the device. You should make sure that you're running Castro Podcast Player version 2023.15 to get the CarPlay fix.
If you have never tried the app, you should. It works on any iPhone running at least iOS 13, so it's compatible even with the oldest Apple smartphones, such as the iPhone 6 (which the Cupertino-based tech giant has already left behind). The app is free but comes with in-app purchases for the full experience.
