The detailed city experience, also known as DCE, is Apple Maps' most significant update in history, marking the transition from third-party maps to Apple's in-house replacement.
The DCE also includes an overwhelming amount of map data, with incredible details like lane markings, 3D models, sidewalks, crosswalks, trees, buildings, and upgraded navigation.

Apple has been rolling out the detailed city experience worldwide in stages, mainly because the company needs more time to scan new regions, process the map data, and eventually release it to users. All these steps take years, so the DCE is arriving at a painfully slow pace, though Apple has been working at full speed on making it happen.

Meanwhile, a navigation app you probably never heard of brought a DCE-inspired experience to users in Dubai.

Yango Maps, an application whose main focus is providing navigation and exploration features in the UAW, recently got an update seemingly inspired by Apple Maps' best idea. Users on reddit discovered that the app now offers almost the same goodies as Apple Maps does in the regions where the DCE is already available, including detailed lane markings, 3D models, and even parking spot locations.

Apple Maps did not bring the DCE to Dubai, so Yango Maps is currently the only way to get these detailed maps in the region.

Screenshots posted on reddit by user KickNo5073 show the beauty of the DCE-inspired experience in all its glory, and if you're familiar with the Apple Maps update, you should notice the resemblance quite easily. You can barely tell Yango Maps and Apple Maps apart, especially in the dark mode, where the resemblance between the two is more than obvious.

Meanwhile, Apple is working non-stop on expanding the DCE availability, and Italy looks like the next destination, as the company has recently been spotted dropping placeholders in Rome and Milan. Apple uses placeholders for locations where it'll introduce 3D buildings as part of the DCE update. The company doesn't announce the new locations in advance, so we'll have to wait and see if Italy is the next DCE destination, with a press release likely to surface in early 2024.

Apple has been hard at work on making Apple Maps a more advanced Google Maps rival, especially as the competition in this space is getting fiercer. The latest iOS update also brought offline navigation, a feature that's been missing for years and has been available in Google Maps for a long time. With offline maps, users can navigate to a destination without an Internet connection if they download the necessary data when the device is still online. The offline navigation mode supports driving, walking, and transit directions, though it won't provide the user with traffic data and real-time updates.
