This is How Many Trash Cans Toyota US Spared the Earth Since 2009

Imagine that each dot in the picture above is a trash can. Can you picture it? OK, because that’s how 1,9 million trash cans might look if you put all of them together and take a picture from a huge distance. And that’s what Toyota didn’t want to happen.
Since Toyota joined the WasteWise program in 2009, it managed to spare our dear planet of roughly 1,900,000 trash cans worth of waste at its sales and logistics facilities across the US.

And this month, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized the automaker’s efforts and honored it with the 2013 WasteWise Large Business Partner of the Year award.

“Toyota focuses on continually improving how we do business,” says Chris Reynolds, TMS chief environmental officer. “By reducing waste and increasing efficiency, we save environmental resources and lower costs for both Toyota and our customers.”

Over the past four years, TMS facilities recycled or avoided production of more than 304 million pounds of trash. That’s equal to the weight of 1,843 Endeavor space shuttles or around 670 Statues of Liberty.

Toyota achieved this by thinking out of the box mostly. For example, after NAPCK’s (North American Parts Center Kentucky) trucks finished shipping parts to local dealers, all remaining plastic bags and plastic stretch wraps are collected for the trip back and sold to nearby manufacturers that use recycled materials to make composite patio materials.

The company also uses returnable shipping containers for parts to avoid massacring trees for cardboard or other paper items.
