Until the unveiling of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe, the world was still waiting for a car to truly take over where the legendary BMW 2002 left off many years ago.
The 2002 wasn’t an icon just for its looks or its price but rather for the way it drove and the fact that it was successful in proving that turbocharged petrol engines are possible. That was possible using never before seen technology like a KKK turbocharger and a fuel injected engine (that was back in 1971). However, only one model was turbocharged and that was the 2002 Turbo. Today we’re talking about the 2002tii model.
Even though it didn’t have the turbocharger hooked up to the engine, this one was still using a fuel injection system and drove like a dream. That’s probably one of the reasons Greenday’s lead singer, Billie Joe, got one in the first place. What happened afterwards was not so pretty though.
The man was probably too lazy to switch gears manually or he might’ve found it too demeaning, so he installed an AUTOMATIC GEARBOX instead of the original 4-speed manual this car must’ve come with. Apart from completely destroying the car’s handling (the things everyone loved about it and why so many people bought it in the past) he also managed to make it really hard to look at. Just glance at that gearshift lever and your stomach will wrench.
On top of that, since he is a big audiophile, the car also received a horrible sound system comprised of two speaker boxes installed in the footwells. Not only it makes the whole interior look sad and improvised, why the hell would you need such a thing when you have a beautiful 2-liter petrol engine to listen to, the first fuel-injected model in BMW’s history.
The reasons behind Billie’s decision might escapes us now but if there’s one thing I know is that there’s no excuse for what he did. Moreover, the car is now on sale on eBay, and it reached a bid of around USD26,000 as I’m writing. Too much for a ruined car, in my honest opinion.
