There are so many vehicles suitable for camper conversions. The go-to options are vans, such as the Mercedes Sprinter, and buses, which have significantly surged in popularity recently. But the rig I'm checking out today proves that with the proper preparation and budget, you can create an outstanding tiny home on wheels out of more extreme vehicles.
What we have here is an M1089 Wrecker military vehicle, one beast of a machine with a 6x6 drive. It's impossible to miss this bad boy on the road, as it's 30 feet (9 meters) long and 8 feet (2.4 meters) wide. In its current form, the vehicle tips the scales at about 30,000 lbs. (13,608 kg).

It runs on a 6.6-liter, 6-cylinder diesel engine paired with an Allison automatic transmission and gets around 6-7 MPG.

One of the more important features of this vehicle is the CTIS (Central Tire Inflation System). It allows you to adjust how inflated your tires are on the go. So, if you're stuck in the sand or mud, you can get out at a touch of a button. That, paired with the permanent 6x6 drive, will enable you to embark on any expedition.

The owner of this insane build is Tim Robel, also known as the Adventure Athlete. As his nickname suggests, he practices all sorts of sports, such as kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, paragliding, and more. It made sense for him to build such a rig. Amazingly, he carries all the gear with him in the camper. By the way, this isn't his first project – his first camper was a converted GMC Canyon.

Tim got the military vehicle bone-stock, so everything you see on it was hand-built by him, including the 28-foot (8.5-meter) cabin. At the rear, you'll notice two spare tires on spindles – the best part about this setup is they act as two casters because they're the lowest departure angle of the truck. Ingenious, isn't it?

Other notable exterior features are storage compartments and an awning, but you can find these on a standard camper. What makes this rig truly special is a massive ramp at the rear that leads into an enormous garage.

Tim carries a trials motorbike and two e-bikes in the garage, but what I find amazing is that he also stores all the tools he used to build the camper, such as a welder, a mini mill, a lathe, and more – basically, it's a full-on workshop. He even has two paramotors. To make things even crazier, he uses solar energy to power everything in the garage.

For storage, Tim devised several shelves, but he stores most of the smaller items in huge tool chests. The garage is full of stuff, but some of the more notable utilities are an icemaker and a washer/dryer. Furthermore, you'll find a ladder that leads to the roof, where Tim installed a 13-foot (4-meter) deck, the same size as the garage. Just imagine: you can put some chairs there and hang out with your friends while you admire the view from high up.

Step through a door, and you'll be in the living quarters of this camper, a 15-foot (4.6-meter) long space. Let me start off by saying that it's one of the best designs I've ever seen on a camper, with an ingenious layout, immense space, and next-level comfort. I'm also fond of the aesthetic, featuring black walls and other dark elements blended with intense pops of color here and there.

The living room/bedroom is located toward the front of the vehicle, near the driver's cabin. It's got what's undoubtedly the biggest TV I've ever seen inside a tiny home on wheels. On the opposite side, there's an enormous couch that not only looks extremely comfortable but also serves as an extra bed.

The ceiling above is actually the bed, which is mounted on a HappiJac lift. Tim lowers it until it's almost level with the couch – this way, he can watch TV even when the bed is down – I've never seen such a setup before. To make things even better, he has an Xbox and a PS5 hooked up to the TV.

Another distinctive feature of this camper is that instead of conventional windows, Tim installed hatches. This way, he can fully open the hatches by simply pushing them out.

For heating, Tim bought a Chinese diesel heater, but he swears by his Cubic Mini wood stove. Even though it's quite small, Tim said it really warms up the interior, explaining that he managed to keep an indoor temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) while outside, it was 26 degrees Fahrenheit (-3 degrees Celsius).

Next up, we have the kitchen, which is very well-equipped. It features an apartment-size oven with a four-burner stovetop, a microwave, and an enormous fridge/freezer. For storage, Tim again used a massive toolbox. Normally, a toolbox would look out of place in the kitchen, but not in this camper.

Opposite the kitchen, you'll find a seating area comprising two benches and a sizeable floating table. You can admire the view outside through a large hatch. Tim also added two katana swords near the hatch because why not? It looks cool, that's for sure.

Under the benches, you'll find two huge storage spaces which serve as a pantry. Amazingly, Tim said he carried food that would last him for about a year. How crazy is it to stock up for an entire year in a camper?

Next up, we have the bathroom. Of course, just like all the other areas in this camper, there's a lot of room. You'll discover a mirror, a sink, some storage spaces, a toilet, a shower, and an instant water heater connected to a 100-gallon (379-liter) freshwater tank.

I can wholeheartedly say this is one of the best campers I've ever seen, but that might also be because my requirements for a tiny home on wheels closely align with Tim's. Regardless, this is a mind-blowingly practical conversion in which Tim has clearly put blood, sweat, and tears.
