When it was first announced in the beginning of the year, the ThermaHelm made its fair share of waves. It promised to bring an unprecedented degree of safety for the wearer and the potential to save countless lives lost in motorcycle accidents.
Those promises targeted a market launch for the helmet in May, but for some reason, that didn't happen. The wait appears to have been worth it though, as the creator of the helmet, Julian J. Preston-Powers now says the product will be launched on the market during the Carole Nash Motorcycle Live 2010 show which is currently taking place in Birmingham.
The helmet, included on the 2009 Best of British Innovation Awards list, will probably be priced at GBP299 ($466) for the simple version and at GBP499 ($777) for the more high tech one. The latter comes equipped with Bluetooth, video cameras and GPS system.
According to the creator of the helmet, the technology behind it allows for an unprecedented improvement in safety for the rider. An inbuilt device that acts like an instant ice pack is used to cool a rider’s head after an accident, thus preventing brain swelling, one of the major causes for fatalities in head injuries.
“ThermaHelm will save lives; so much so in fact that riding without ThermaHelm technology is like driving without an airbag. It’s not worth the risk,” says the inventor about his creation.
“In addition, our GPS Emergency Beacon Transmitter will call our base-station operators and alert emergency services to the downed rider’s exact GPS coordinates.”
