Safety is important, regardless of whether you’re in a car or riding a two-wheeler. Whereas in the former scenario, automakers take care of that for you, in the latter, you’re on your own when it comes to researching products and settling on the one perfect for you.
Bicycle helmets are a dime a dozen, so you have your work cut out for you. Depending on budget and the type of riding you do, you can choose from a huge variety of traditional-looking helmets, but if you’re looking to really stand out, without compromising your safety, Voronoi is probably the way to go.

The Voronoi Helmet is not an actual product yet, but the team of Chinese designers behind it are hoping it will become one by the end of the year. It’s unlike any other you’ve seen: on top a hard-top hat made of carbon fiber is a mesh-like structure.

That’s where the helmet gets its name from: this mesh structure is inspired by the 3D Voronoi structures one finds in nature, like “the structure of an animal’s bone, turtle shell, and even straw.” The idea is to offer maximum protection with the use of the least material. By applying the parametric technique, designers Yuefeng Zhou, Zhecheng Xu, Haiwei Wang created the helmet that absorbs maximum force in case of an impact, while maintaining the appearance of lightness.

“[It gives] perfect physical performance in aspects of lightness, stability and energy interaction,” the designers say. “At the balance of lightness and safety, we hope to provide people with more comfortable, more fashionable, and safer personal protection bicycle helmet.”

Whether this helmet is fashionable remains arguable, but it could very well be the safest light helmet out there. It would also be the airiest product of the kind, given the large holes in the outer layer.

The Voronoi Helmet was awarded the A’ Design Award for safety clothing and personal protective equipment design category, 2019-2020. At the time it was introduced in the competition, designers were still conducting experimental tests on it. When and if it becomes an actual product, it will be available in three sizes.
