The Stig Points Finger at the BBC

Most of the media, including autoevolution, being caught in the frenzy caused by the revealing of the Stig's identity, forgot to dig deeper and find out why the most famous anonymous character in the world decided to do the unthinkable and reveal himself to the world.

As usual, Ben Collins, the man now identified as the Stig thought best, again, to explain himself the reasons behind the decision to write an autobiography, and hence reveal his identity. According to The Telegraph, the Stig decided to re-become Ben Collins because he felt he was being treated as a “prop.”

Collins goes even further and says that when he informed the BBC top brass about his decision, he was threatened he will lose his job (for the record, that is exactly what happened). Collins says he was bullied out of his job.

Collins claims that at the time when he decided to write about himself and his role as the Stig, most of the world already knew he was the driver in a white suit.

"Across the motoring world many people already knew who I was. But coming without warning, this was a snowball that couldn't stop rolling," Collins told The Sun.

BBC denies it has tried to twist Collin's hand into submission, as it was only trying to warn him about his contractual obligations.

"The BBC categorically refutes any accusations of bullying,”
a BBC spokeswoman told The Telegraph. "Once Ben informed the BBC of his intentions, he was reminded of his confidentiality obligations and it was made clear to him that if he went ahead with the book, he would not be able to remain in his role."

As you know, Collins won his case against the BBC in court and will publish his book. How successful it will be, it remains to be seen.
