Say what you will about the elegant Mercedes-Benz sedans, but the heart of these Germans will always be within their coupes. When it comes to putting “coupe” and “flagship” in the same sentence, Mercedes-Benz is more than happy to do so. Despite their potentially rich bouquet, there are a number of Merc coupes that will never happen and we are here to talk about the CLS two-door coupe.
What you see above is actually 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG 2-door Coupe. As you’ve guessed by now, we are dealing with a rendering of the facelifted CLS, which comes from X-Tomi. “This car popularised the four-door coupe segment, so why wouldn’t it deserve a proper coupe incarnation?” we hear you asking.
Well, for the same reason that keeps the wonderfully complete Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe and Cabriolet from receiving AMG badges. Or, to put it another way, cannibalization.
A CLS with two doors would share too many customers with the newly-crowned king of the automaker’s range, the S-Class Coupe. Sure, if we are to get into the details, we notice that the two would be different enough to justify the former’s presence, but not everybody who buys these cars spends evening reading online, so the Germans would simply say a polite, but firm “nein”.
They are well aware of the fact that, if they built this, they couldn’t help but hone it into a superb grand tourer.
