The Major Hype Behind Starfield Wasn't Completely Wrong

At long last, the reviews for Starfield are in, and they praise Bethesda's and Todd Howard's latest brainchild. It's not earth-shattering by any stretch of the imagination like many overly-hyped fans expected. Still, at the end of the day, it looks like another great RPG from Bethesda. Whether people would have preferred a Fallout 5 or Elder Scrolls 6 instead is an entirely different question.
I would have gone with Fallout 5 to the detriment of Starfield because I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic wastelands with a '50s aesthetic, but to each their own. While Bethesda won't release another Fallout until at least 2030, luckily, Amazon Studios has recently announced that a Fallout show is coming in 2024 on their streaming platform, Amazon Prime.

Slipstreaming back to our neck of the galaxy, the reviews are in for Starfield, and for all intents and purposes, people are more than satisfied with it. It's not the Saviour many overly-hyped superfans made it out to be. Still, the overall scores indicate it's a hit.

Steam has no review scores yet, so we'll have to wait until the 6th to see how players feel about it. However, 51 Critic Reviews gave it an 87 on Metacritic for Xbox Series X and an 88 on PC. The game might be locked at 30 fps on the Series X|S, but that didn't get in the way of praises.

On OpenCritic, a less controversial scoring aggregator, it got a score of 88 from 99 critic reviews, with a recommendation score of 94%.

It's way below the 96 Baldur's Gate III raked in, but you can't have all winners in one year. The Game of the Year Awards hosted by Geoff Keighley on December 7 will be jampacked with titles upon titles. Pound for pound, as they say, 2023 looks to be the most remarkable year in video game history.

Starfield doesn't come out until September 6 for the general population, but the reviewers aren't the only ones enjoying the game. Those who purchased the Starfield Premium Edition got to play it from September 1 with Early Access.

With only four days left on the clock, my humble financial suggestion would be to wait for the Standard Edition to become available on Game Pass and play it there. It's a real money saver.

Now, returning to what I said earlier about no Fallout 5 until sometime after 2023, Todd Howard, long-time industry legend and Game Director behind Starfield, said that Bethesda Game Studios will release Elder Scrolls 6 first, and only after that will they come out with another Fallout. Even though it might not even be named Fallout 5. It could even be a soft reboot.

Elder Scrolls hasn't even entered production, and judging by the company's history with game releases, we could see ES6 only at the end of this console generation, meaning 2028.

Codrin just loves American classics, from the 1940s and ‘50s, all the way to the muscle cars of the '60s and '70s. In his perfect world, we'll still see Hudsons and Road Runners roaming the streets for years to come (even in EV form, if that's what it takes to keep the aesthetic alive).
