Hondas have always been cool cars for the younger generation, for the people who could never afford a true sportscar. The Japanese automaker has always found cool ways to make its vehicles feel special, from the light and compact bodies to the peppy VTEC engines. Following the industry norm, the Civic and Accord have steadily become bigger and heavier, but this latest episode of Petrolicious decides to focus on the old-school Honda ways.
The story being told here is of a die-hard fan, somebody who found everything he ever wanted in a 1987 Civic CRX. This car first came out in 1983 during the oil crisis and without ever relying on hybrid technology could achieve as much as 42 mpg according to the EPA rating of the time.
Christopher Hoffman fell in love with the Honda brand when his mom let him pic his family's first car, a 1977 Civic wagon. During his teens he owned a Scirocco until its ureliability convinced him to switch back to the Japanese brand. An Si version of the CRX was his pick, powered by a 1.5-liter SOHC 12-valve engine.
From now on, when somebody says "Japanese modern classic" we're going to think of this thing. Be warned, this is an absolutely stunning video you're about to watch.
