The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is here, and with it, the off-road enthusiasts' favorite: the Trailhunter. It comes with features that make it adventure-ready and exclusively with the I-Force Max powertrain.
The sixth-generation Toyota 4Runner seems to have everything that the fans of the model were hoping for. The roll-down window and the Trailhunter version were definitely on their wish list and Toyota checked both those boxes, making it worth the wait. The previous generation had been on the market for 15 years.

Introduced with the Tacoma, the Trailhunter badge also made its way into the brand-new 4Runner lineup, bringing 2.5-inch forged shocks with position-sensitive rear external piggyback remote reservoirs from Old Man Emu. The shocks lift the 4Runner by 2 inches at the front and by 1.5 inches at the rear, making room for the 33-inch Toyo Open Country T/T tires.

The all-new SUV receives high-strength skid plates and rock rails to protect the body against whatever the rough terrain may throw at it. A powerful 2400W AC inverter is standard equipment on the Trailhunter.

The Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter gets matching bronze elements

The Trailhunter version is instantly recognizable. It sports the bronze "TOYOTA" lettering in capital letters in what the automaker calls the Heritage front grille, matching the bronze wheels with new design.

An integrated 20-inch LED light bar and a pair of color-selectable Rigid LED fog lights are also on the menu.

A 4Runner-typical ARB roof rack was mounted on the roof and an on-board air compression system was installed in the rear cargo area so owners can deflate the tires before driving on sand, for instance.

Several auxiliary switches are on board the Trailhunter, most of them controlling the functions that give a helping hand in the off-road.

It doesn't exactly look like a plush space in there, but considering that we are dealing with an off-roader, nobody expects luxury inside the cabin of the Trailhunter.

A portable JBL speaker is also in there, in the company of the new 8-inch or 14-inch infotainment touchscreens. A 7-inch digital instrument cluster is standard, but customers can also go for the 12.3-inch unit if they are willing to pay more.

Exclusively available with the i-Force Max powertrain

Underpinned by the TNGA-F global truck platform, which it shares with the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter is exclusively available with the carmaker's i-Force Max hybrid powertrain and four-wheel drive.

The i-Force Max integrates a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which also powers the TRD Pro and Platinum, working alongside a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated into the transmission.

The system delivers a total of 326 horsepower (330 metric horsepower) and 465 pound-feet (629 Newton meters) of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is the most powerful powertrain ever available on the 4Runner.

A high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame, a multi-link coil rear, and double wishbone front suspension make it the off-roader that it is, together with the 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles, and the Multi-Terrain Monitor system. The 4Runner with the i-Force Max can tow up to 6,000 pounds (2,722 kilograms).

It goes on sale this fall

The 4Runner Trailhunter will go into production this summer at Toyota's Tahara plant in Japan like all the other versions. The model should arrive in dealerships across America in the fall of 2024.

The off-road-orientated version is also subject to Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty that applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items.

An additional 60-month/60,000-mile warranty covers the powertrain, while the hybrid battery is under warranty for 10 years or 150,000 miles. All warranties are transferable across ownership.
