As ICE-powered vehicles are waning off from the limelight to make room for the new generation of electric cars, so does the entertainment media begin to feature more and more events with 0 emissions. Well, 0 emissions in traffic, not during the building process. Today, we're witnessing a couple of heavyweights duke it out in a U-drag race. How does that differ from a regular 1/4-mile race, you ask? Well, let's get into it.
A U-drag race is nothing complicated. For the standard quarter-mile, they floor it, but instead of crossing a finish line, they brake to make a U-turn, then sprint back toward the original starting line. The last one there loses. That's it.

This time, we're seeing two monstrously expensive electric rides go head-to-head in a duel of giants. First, we have the eye-candy 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring. It has a dual-motor configuration with an all-wheel drive that can produce 819 hp (830 ps) with 885 lb-ft (1200 Nm) of torque.

The stats are pretty impressive on their own, but when you put them next to the $140,000+ price tag, they make more sense. The Air Grand Touring weighs 5,226 lbs. or 2,370 kg.

Next, we have the all-new 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE that comes a bit cheaper than the Lucid, at $126,540. It also has two electric motors with an AWD system that can deliver up to 617 hp (625 ps) with 701 lb-ft (950 Nm) of torque. It might be cheaper, but it's less powerful and heavier, at 5,587 lbs. or 2,534 kg.

Now that we've introduced our contenders let's see how they performed on the tarmac.

During the first race, the EQE was first off the line, but after a few seconds, the Lucid caught up and then some. At the U-turn, the EQE was faster to break, with the Lucid lagging behind. It was close, but the Lucid lost to the Mercedes, even with all that extra horsepower.

For the second race, the boys from Edmunds Cars, who organized this entire thing, switched places for a more balanced outcome. They do this in every race.

The second time, the Lucid had a much better launch than the EQE, arriving first at the U-turn. After exiting the turn, the Air Grand Touring managed to stay ahead of the AMG and was first across the finish line. They held a third race, of course, and this time, the Lucid dominated the entire race, winning the whole day.

Now, let's see the best stats. The 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring got from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, while the 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE did it in 3.1 seconds. For the quarter-mile, the Lucid's fastest time was 10.7 seconds at 130.6 mph, while the AMG EQE did it in 11.3 seconds at 118.5 mph.

As for the entire race, the Lucid won in 33.2 seconds at 139.9 mph, while the Mercedes finished in 33.5 seconds at 128.7 mph.
