It has a ridiculously long name. It’s only available in the People’s Republic of China, at least for the time being. It boasts 60 kilometers (about 37 miles) of pure electric range. Ladies and gents, cue the compact-sized BMW X1 xDrive25Le iPerformance.
Unveiled today at the Chengdu Motor Show 2016, the BMW X1 xDrive25Le iPerformance debuts as the first-ever plug-in hybrid offering in the compact-sized luxury premium crossover segment. The outer shell is that of the regular X1, yet details such as the blue detailing in the front grille, center caps, and charging port are tell-tale signs that this is not your run-of-the-mill X1.
Based on the China-only long-wheelbase version of the X1, the plug-in hybrid powertrain of this not-too-sporty utility vehicle is shared with the MPV-like 225xe Active Tourer. To be manufactured locally by BMW Brilliance, the X1 xDrive25Le iPerformance is animated by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine at the front and an electric motor at the rear. Specs aren’t too bad either.
With 134 horsepower (100 kW) and 162 lb-ft (220 Nm) from the ICE plus 94 horsepower (70 kW) and 122 lb-ft (165) of virtually instant torque from the electric motor, the combined output is enough for accelerating to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 7.4 seconds. In electric mode, the eco-friendly crossover tops out at 75 mph (120 km/h), so yeah, this thing can hold its own on the motorway too. But then again, it feels more at home in the urban jungle.
Pricing isn’t available at the present moment, but what matters most is. According to BMW, the 10.7 kWh lithium battery has enough juice for an all-electric range of 60 kilometers (37 miles). With the ICE also in the game, combined cycle fuel consumption is rated at 1.8 liters / 100 km. That’s 130 U.S. mpg or 157 imperial mpg, impressive figures for a PHEV of this size.
Accounting for the 35-liter fuel tank, the X1 xDrive25Le iPerformance is able to travel as much as 630 kilometers (391 miles) at a time.
