BMW 225xe Active Tourer Plug-in Hybrid Detailed Before Frankfurt Debut

Back in July, BMW held a private event at its Miramas test facility in France, showing us exactly what its plans are in terms of eco-friendly mobility. They brought out some interesting concepts including a hydrogen-powered i8, but we knew most of them would never see the light of day in production guise.
There was one that stood out, though, as an exception to the rule: the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid. As we’ve been saying for quite some time, the production version is called 225xe and has an output on par with the 225i model.

That means that the combined horsepower figure of the internal combustion engine under the bonnet and the electric motor in the back is 224 HP. Yes, it’s a bit short but close nonetheless.

The driveline is similar to the one on the BMW i8 if you will but only in a mirror. The 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged mill sits up front and generates only 136 HP and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque. Round the back, on the rear axle, we have an electric motor good for 88 HP and 165 Nm (122 lb-ft) of torque. Sounds familiar?

It’s the same motor used in the 330e plug-in hybrid and, together, the two deliver 224 HP and up to 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. These numbers allow the car to reach an all-electric range of 40 km (25 miles) with a top speed in EV mode of 75 mph (120 km/h).

Fuel consumption, in the most optimistic testing cycle out there, the European one, is rated at 2.1 to 2 l/100 km (134 - 141 mpg imp) while CO2 emissions can go as low as 49 to 46 grams per km, depending on the tires.

Unfortunately, the US won’t be getting this model anytime soon or at all if we’re to believe the statements of BMW spokespersons. However, if there’s anything the auto industry taught us is to never say never.
