No, it's not about bad luck, but about jaw-dropping design: Francois Baptista's 13th pedelec concept is simply amazing. And the 13 comes from the periodic table of the elements, which has Aluminium in the 13th slot. Easy one, huh?
The engineering behind the 13th is as simple as it is amazing: an unibody, or monocoque frame which encompasses the battery pack, motor and all the electronics and wiring. This obviously casts an almost unnatural spell of clean design, lack of clutter and an extreme feel of tidiness which is absolutely wonderful.
Francois Baptista started off with high-grade sheet aluminium which is to be pressed (embossed) into the desired shape and then laser cut into the final form. Having them anodized ensures a long-lasting finish, too.
Looking at the rear wheel design I'm wondering whether Francois is thinking what I'm thinking: how about making the rear wheel hollow and loading it with batteries? Of course, maybe he already thought of this, but the info is scarce, so I had to mention this.
Add in turn signals, tail light, low and high beams and a nifty wheel lock and mirrors, and we might have one of the coolest, most functional e-bikes for the year end.
