While the summer is readily upon us, and the high temperatures and general lack of humidity are perfect for quarter-mile dragstrip shenanigans, unfortunately, not everyone is keeping up with tradition.
For example, we have been longtime fans of the videographer behind the Drag Racing and Car Stuff channel on YouTube, who usually gave us our healthy dose of daily quarter-mile dragstrip brawls like clockwork. That was not the case recently; we have only seen a few video features over the past few months. Luckily, after another long hiatus, the host is back with aggressive action from Bradenton Motorsport Park in Bradenton, Florida.
And the return is pretty triumphant if you love the novel ICE-powered versus EV variety of skirmishes. As per the title, the drag race focus is on a black Porsche 911 Turbo S – probably a thoroughly tuned example, and on a dark blue 1,020-hp Tesla Model X Plaid luxury crossover SUV. But, as per tradition (at least this one is upheld, if not the daily clockwork one), the videographer first puts each contestant into the proper perspective.
So, the first one to try and impress the ICE-powered-loving audience is the dark and menacing Porsche 911 Turbo S which goes against another longtime representative of the sports car establishment – aka the R35 Nissan GT-R. Safe to say that this Porsche is not rocking the OEM powertrain, as the feisty Nissan GT-R doesn't stand a chance and loses the battle in the most inglorious way – gapped by a 9.73s to 10.82 ET. Keep that Turbo S figure in mind, by the way.
Next up comes the Model X Plaid to duke it out with a versicolor BMW M5 – this skirmish was of the 'close, but not close enough' variety, considering the 10s win against the German executive sedan's 10.38s ET. So, now we knew what to expect, and EV fans had better look away as this is not yet another instance where a Plaid easily wipes the floor with its ICE-powered competition at the local quarter-mile dragstrip facility. Quite on the contrary, even if the first pass was too close for comfort (9.92s to another 10s ET).
But, of course, everyone wanted a second run to attempt to achieve absolute glory. The Tesla Model X Plaid owner probably because they didn't see the result from the 911 versus GT-R fight and thought that maybe if they dipped below the 10s, they would settle the score in their favor. And the Porsche 911 Turbo S driver probably because they knew they could do better. And so, they did, as the final confrontation showed that with a bit of help from the aftermarket realm, anyone can still beat a Plaid – including with extra-cool 9.53s versus 9.96s results!
