American electric car manufacturer Tesla announced it has entered the 2010 Monte Carlo Rally for Alternative Energy Vehicles (VEA) with two teams, after last year the Roadster became category winner and also set a new world record for an electric vehicle.
The three-day challenge, designed to test the range and performance of some 100 alternative-fuel vehicles, will be taken for Tesla by Rudi Tuisk, Tesla’s Australia general manager and former chief European technician and former Formula One driver Erik Comas.
"It’s a great honor to be participating something that has deep historical roots yet is simultaneously pushing the rally culture into the future,” Tuisk said at the starting point of the race, in Annecy-le-Vieux, France.
The record Tesla set last year in the competition involved an electric blue Roadster who traveled 387 kilometers from Valence, France and finished the race with 61 kilometers of remaining range. This record was later shattered by Simon Hackett, who drove his Roadster for 501 km on a single charge.
