Teams Rule Out Favorite Status ahead of Bahrain GP

After 15 days of testing this winter, all the major players in the 2010 Formula One championship point at each other for the favorite role prior to the start of the season. While most were arguing that Ferrari holds that spot before the Barcelona test, the Scuderia point at McLaren, the Woking team at Mercedes GP and Red Bull say they're in a good position but “not leading the field.”

Under the circumstances, the drivers were also taught to do the same, avoiding to name themselves favorites for the world title. However, that isn't to mean the others believe it, as is the case of reigning world champion Jenson Button.

Hearing that Michael Schumacher doesn't consider himself a race win contender this season, the 30-year old Brit begged to differ.

He says he is not going to win. I do not completely believe him,” said the British driver, according to German publication Bild.

Button's teammate Lewis Hamilton, a world champion himself, also admitted that the leading field is closer than ever, but insisted that it is still Ferrari everyone should look out for in 2010.

I don't think we're in the strongest position. I think we're in a strong position, just as they (Mercedes) are. I think there are more than four teams at the front. It's really difficult to say who is the most competitive out of all of them, but at the moment the Ferrari looks the fastest I think,” said Ham, who topped the timing reports in Barcelona last week.

As for Ferrari, the guys at Maranello admitted their enthusiasm over the new car, but all of them insisted that it's important not to dwell on the early success recorded by the F10 in testing. After Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso, the team's principal Stefano Domenicali reckoned the competition will be rough this year.

“Before the tests we thought that there might be four teams able to fight for the title. But what we've seen so far (is) there might be even more,” said the Italian boss.
