Massa Believes Ferrari Are Not Favorites for 2010 Title

Although his teammate Fernando Alonso showed a lot of optimism when referring to his Ferrari F10 prior to the Barcelona testing last week, Felipe Massa tries to keep his feet on the ground ahead of the season opening round in Bahrain. According to the Brazilian driver, naming a favorite until the first race of the new campaign is absurd, given that all the big teams have shown some positive signs of improvement during the 4 days of running on Circuit de Catalunya.

Today the timesheet says (Lewis) Hamilton (is quickest), but we're all very close together, it's just tenths of a second,” said Massa, who told the Spanish news agency EFE that singling out a certain team for the Bahrain race would be “absurd, given the good performance of the other teams.

We never expected to have an advantage and to go to the first race and win in an easy way, definitely not. We expect to have a competitive car, and this I think we have done. The car is reliable, but also consistent, and that is what we want to start the season,” added the Brazilian racer.

Alonso also returned to his initial comments regarding the overall performance of the F10, insisting that, while the car is obviously the best he has ever driven in Formula One, “it doesn't mean it is the best car of the championship.

Ferrari's rivals from Mercedes GP also reckoned that the Scuderia is the team to beat at the moment, but team principal Ross Brawn revealed his team is getting closer to the Maranello outfit, as “the lead they (Ferrari) had at the beginning of the test season seems to be reduced and we are now all closer to them.”

Bernie Ecclestone's favorite for the 2010 world title Sebastian Vettel also sees Ferrari as the reference point for the Bahrain race, but reckons the time differences between the top 4 teams are very small.

Behind them (Ferrari) it is between us, McLaren and Mercedes. I don't see us at the front yet. But we are just about there, both with less and with more fuel (on board),” said the German driver.
