Indian carmaker Tata Motors decided to advertise its tiny Nano as the cheapest car in the world when it was released back in 2009. The “cheapest” tag became synonymous with the vehicle and for most this trait became more of a standard feature of the vehicle rather than an attribute.
Unfortunately for Nano lovers, the Nano price will grow, and grow, and grow. Citing "very sharp increase in input costs," the Indian carmaker decided its time to make some money out of the car and announced a price increase for the model.
Now, nobody yet knows how much an increase Tata will stick to the price of the Nano. The man who decided to tell the world about this did so without the approval of his bosses and probably didn't have time to go into specifics while talking to AFP.
"It is a very nominal increase given the rise in raw material costs," he limited himself at saying.
In fact, Tata has been threatening to raise the price of the Nano since March, citing at that time the “prices of commodities and logistics” which “have gone up.” No specifics have been provided at that time either.
So, more bad news for the world's cheapest car. A car which, truth be told, stopped being the world's cheapest car earlier this year, when Geely announced its contraption, the IG (Intelligent Geely). While the Nano (still) costs some $2,500, the IG will be priced at around $2,300.
Who would have thought, a few years ago, such a bitter battle will be fought for the title of the world's cheapest car...
