Geely IG, Cheaper than the Tata Nano

The title of the world's cheapest car will no longer be an attribute of only one vehicle, but tends to become a segment of its own after the Chinese from Geely previewed earlier this month the IG solar hybrid.

According to GoAuto, the concept presented by Geely is quickly gearing up for production with 2012 being the most likely year to see the car hit the streets. The car will be launched in India, at prices below those of the Tata Nano. According to Autocar, the price for the IG (Intelligent Geely), should be 1,500 British pounds.

Described by Geely as an “eclosion”, which is “the emergence of an adult insect from a pupal case or an insect larva from an egg,” the concept presented this months boasts some antenna-like doors, which brings it closer to the insect look Geely aimed for.

The EK-1 is lead-acid battery powered reaching 80km/h top speed and 80 km range, and EK-2 is lithium iron phosphate battery powered with maximum speed of 150km and range of 180 km and can recharge 80% of battery capacity in 18 minutes.

For the production version, Geely will likely go for a 1.0l three-cylinder gasoline engine with CVVT. The unit develops 67 hp and 90 Nm and will likely be paired with a start-stop system.

As for the full-electric powertrain, it is scheduled to enter production sometime in the next three years.

“The concept has had a very positive reaction, and with the car not launching until 2012 there is time for us to expand our network before then,” a Geely spokesperson told Autocar.
