Tata Motors is probably very glad it bough Jaguar Land Rover right now. Because while the British firms are booming, the same can't be said about business in India. Still, the makers of the Nano have come a long way in a short time.
After revealing the Zest sedan and Bolt hatchback at the beginning of the year, the latter is now moving closer to its production. Details and specifications about the Bolt 5-door suggest a much more competitive and technologically advanced car than what we've been accustomed to seeing from the Indians.
When launched in early 2015, the Bolt will be offered with a choice of two engines. The petrol model will have a 1.2T Revotron, basically a small turbo with 90 hp and 140 Nm of torque from 1,400 rpm. There will also be a small diesel available, namely the 1.3 Quadrajet, making 75 hp and 190 Nm of peak torque at 1750 rpm. As for gearbox options, the standard 5-speed shifter is expected to be joined by an automated manual within a year.
The Tata Bolt is by no means a pretty car, but it is going to be sold with a relatively high equipment level. For safety reasons, this hatch will come equipped with with dual airbags, child safety lock, ABS , engine immobilizer, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) and central locking.
We'll remind you that only a few months ago, many Indian market cars, including the Datsun Go and Maruti Suzuki Swift, received a zero star crash safety rating from a global NCAP organization.
As far as the dimensions are concerned, the Bolt is 3,825mm long, 1,695mm wide and 1,550mm tall, which makes it about the size of a Nissan Micra. The new Tata will offer ventilated disc brakes up front and drums at the back. The suspension system uses dual path independent McPherson struts and a semi-independent twist beam with coils springs.
