The Japanese from Subaru managed to get the first ever Australian award for their Outback model, as the car has been named Best SUV Under $40,000 in the Drive Car of the Year 2009 awards, a contest organized by several local publications, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and Drive.
The jury, comprising of editors from the aforementioned publications and writers from several other (Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun, Courier-Mail, Advertiser and so on) found the SUV to "boast excellent space efficiency, a flexible rear load area and good engine/transmission combination."
Nine judges evaluated the best new car releases of 2009 resulting in one overall winner.
“We’ve had fantastic acceptance of our new generation Outback models and this award is great independent proof of their ability," Nick Senior, Subaru Australia managing director said in a release. “Outback established the crossover SUV wagon class in Australia and this award shows it’s still ahead of the game.”
Subaru also managed last week to receive acknowledgment across the ocean as well, as the Outback, together with Legacy (Liberty), Forester, Impreza and Tribeca have all been named he Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Picks.
The feat is even more remarkable as the five vehicles are part of different classes, while the Japanese have been the single carmaker at this year's tests to get a safety pick for its models in all five categories. The IIHS also designated the Legacy one of only two cars which received an "acceptable" rating, instead of the all-present "good" one.
