Subaru wants its presence at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show to reflect the brand’s commitment to the protection of the environment. The Subaru stand will showcase multiple eco innovations, including a “Boxer”-hybrid concept car and an electric city car.
The Hybrid Tourer Concept will introduce the world’s first “Boxer”-hybrid powerplant, in conjunction with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. A 2.0 liter turbocharged boxer engine, featuring direct injection is used together with two electric motors. The latter are powered by lithium-ion batteries - a 10 kW unit at the front and a 20 kW one at the rear of the vehicle. The powerplant is mated to Subaru’s Lineatronic automatic transmission. The electric motors are used for the start-up and low speed driving. When more power is necessary, the internal combustion engine kicks in. The car follows Subaru’s core design philosophy to create a impressive appearance. It offers a generous cabin space, accessible through huge gullwing doors.
Following the same “green” trend, Subaru will also introduce the Stella EV electric plug-in vehicle. This uses a 40kW lithium-ion battery pack that offers a 90 km driving range. The vehicles features a quick charging system, which only takes 15 minutes to recharge the battery at an 80 percent capacity. The car can be plugged into a standard household outlet (240V) and normally takes five hours for a full charge.
The Subaru stand will also feature Boxer diesel model displays, showcasing the carmaker’s unique horizontally-opposed diesel unit. The Impreza, Forester, Legacy and Outback models currently feature the 2.0 liter boxer diesel unit.
