Formula E is the result of the FIA's realisation that EVs are here to stay and their popularity will only grow, and thus they decided to have serious EV racing added to their already large variety of racing types. Officially, Formula E is expected to begin in 2014 and it is clear that people are genuinely excited about the prospect of ‘green’ racing taken to the highest level of technology.
One of the teams which will compete in the upcoming series is the 100 year-old British company, Bluebird, a company plenty with tradition in the art of going fast and doing so in a 'green' way. They have recently unveiled their Formula E racer, the Bluebird GTL, an EV which looks like it has come from another universe. It is a stunning piece of design and it will look superb driven quickly around a track, with just the faint whine of the electric drivetrain barely audible in the background.

In a statement given to The Charging Point, a Bluebird official, Don Wales stated that “Formula-E represents the birth of a new era for us. Where we struggle with [financial] support for land speed record attempts, the circuit racing car is going to be more attractive to potential sponsors. Formula-E really is the future, definitely. Electric racing, with the FIA behind it, is going to be a big thing, and if we're in it at the dawn of that then Bluebird should be a very strong brand for the future.”

We look forward to the start of Formula E as we think it’s a step in the right direction for racing - think about it: F1 has provided road cars with may new technologies, which would have never been developed if they were not required in F1. So too will happen with Formula E, with new tech being developed for racing and then trickling down to mass-market EVs, making it a win-win situation for EV buyers and racing team owners alike.
