Statistics Show Vettel Best Driver of 2010

Following his first Formula One title in career, Sebastian Vettel was not given too much credit by some critics for his outstanding performance in 2010. In fact, his winning the title was put more on the expense of Ferrari's failure to provide Fernando Alonso with a decent race strategy in the season finale Abu Dhabi, rather than Vettel's majestic drive in the last couple of races of last season.

However, according to a bunch of statistics (and we all know that figures don't lie) put together by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, it emerges that Vettel was clearly the best driver of 2010, regardless of the many mistakes his did in his race for the world title. The only chapter where he finished head-to-head with someone (Fernando Alonso) was race wins, each crossing the finish line in 1st place 5 times.

Other than that, Vettel beat everybody (in a dominant manner, we might add) in pole positions, being the highest qualifier 10 out of 19 times, as compared to Webber's 5 poles. More than that, in the race, Vettel's average position throughout the Sunday action was 1.95, as compared to his teammate's 2.79 and Alonso's 5.79.

As far as fastest laps in the race are concerned, Vettel has been quicker than teammate Mark Webber by an average 0.051 seconds. Needless to say, most of these statistics have the two Red Bull drivers in the top two spots, the only reason why they didn't battle for the world title all by themselves being the mistakes they did through the 2010 season, alongside the reliability issues recorded by the RB6 early in the season.

Additionally, Vettel led F1 field for more than 2000 km (1240 miles) in 2010, as compared to Webber's less than 1500 km (930 miles). Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively in that category.

Some statistics were however favorable for Ferrari, beginning with reliability, where the Ferrari F10 completed the most laps of the 2010 season. Additionally, Fernando Alonso scored 5 fastest laps through the recently ended campaign, same as McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, while Vettel had to settle for 3.
