Before the South Korean automaker was acquired by Mahindra, SsangYong was known in the world for making atrocious-looking and boring vehicles. But the SsangYong of yesterday has been turned around by Indian parent Mahindra and the hopes and dreams of the new SsangYong are distilled into a perky B-segment crossover model baptized X100.
For this year's edition of the Paris Motor Show, the carmaker showcased two concepts - XIV-Air (white and roofless) and XIV-Adventure (greenish and with a metal roof), described as "near production ready concepts of the soon to be launched X100."
Yoo-il Lee, the SsangYong CEO, declared at the posh Paris Motor Show that the X100 will go on sale early in 2015, adding: "With the XIV-Air and XIV-Adventure pre-production concepts, you can get a very good idea of what this new car will look like, and after several years developing this futuristic model, it’s very exciting to think that we’re now just a few months away from its launch."
What should we expect from SsangYong's upcoming global B-segment crossover?
Just take a look at the photo gallery below, depicting the XIV-Air and XIV-Adventure concepts, mentally erase all the way too futuristic styling cues and too expensive toys onboard and you're left with the X100. That's why the targa T-top roof of the XIV-Air won't become a production reality, but the headlights and taillights design seem to be production-ready, as well as cabin elements such as the steering wheel, seats, dashboard design and the tablet-like touchscreen infotainment system.
Both concepts measure 4,195 mm in length and 2.6 meters in wheelbase, while the technical side of the deal is dealt with by a 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol and a 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine. These newly-developed mills meet Euro 6 efficiency and emissions standards and boast with start/stop and low CO2 emissions. Last but not east, transmission options consist of a six-speed manual and a CVT gearbox.
