It's no secret that Volkswagen has been pondering the idea of a really hot Beetle coupe. They even made a concept, which we thought was quite awesome. It looks like the Beetle R has finally been approved for production, as this test car has been spotted in Germany, looking exactly like what we expected… if not better.
But what is it going to be like this R version of the Beetle. It's a bit of a head scratcher. It's being suggested that it will get the same 300 horsepower engine as the new Golf R, but I'm not 100% sure of that, as cool as it might sound.

The Beetle is based on the Golf 6 and I've heard the floor pan is almost the same. It hasn't not been adapted for a 4Motion version, which it should have if it's going to take the the Golf R and Audi S3's new engine.

Another solution would be to make it front-wheel drive, basically identical to the Scirocco R, which some say is more fun to drive than the all-wheel drive Golf. As a Vdub fan, I'd say this is the most likely scenario, since adapting the Beetle platform for a new 300 hp engine or 4Motion would be unjustifiably expensive. They've also proven unwilling to make any car that's as fast as the Golf R in the past, since it's a performance flagship of sorts.

Leaving speculation aside, VW is going to try and make a 6 or sub-6 second car. Leaving speculation aside, the test mule is really cool. It has frozen gray paint (or a wrap), black R wheels (probably 19-inch) and the R line body kit.
