We caught up with the upcoming F48 X1 once again, still around the Arctic Circle and we have to say we’re sorry to see the old one leave. The new model will be migrating to the UKL FWD platform shared with a lot of new MINI models and the Active Tourer, using new, modular engines too.
That means that the brilliant handling of the small crossover will be lost forever, alongside the hydraulic steering some models are currently using.
There’s no doubt that the new X1 will have powerful engines and the xDrive AWD system available as an optional but just the fact that the standard model will send all of its power to the front wheels makes me gag.
It will look good too, probably following in the footsteps of the X3 and X4, going for the new front fascia that has the headlights connected to the kidney grille, whilst offering more interior space at the same time. However, none of this makes me happier in any way.
If the cost of a new X1 will remain the same, it’s highly likely that it will continue to be a big hit on the market. At $30,900 the current model is one of the best selling models BMW has in the US at the moment.
The F48 version will come out somewhere in late 2015, early 2016 and will be using the new B-family engines rated somewhere between 116 HP and upwards of 220 HP. A hybrid using the i3 eDrive technology is also expected.
