The F20/F21 1 Series front end is one of the most criticized parts of a BMW since the days of Chris Bangle.
However, the Bavarians are not backing dow and are leaving the car basically as-is for the upcoming mid-life facelift. Our spy photographers have caught up with this lightly camouflaged prototype undergoing hot weather testing.

In 2014, the 2nd generation hatchback will receive its Life Cycle Impulse. The 1er will get a new grille with different vertical bars, slightly revised bumper intakes and of course some updated headlights. Later on, we should be seeing prototypes with camouflaged tail lamps, but for now it's a case of same-old same-old.

Careful inspection of the back end shows a missmatch between the hole in the lower bumper and that small exhaust, indicating engineers are trying on a new drivetrain. Remember, the 1 Series was the first prototype car to get their new 1.5-liter turbo engine. This modular engine form the basis for uture 4- and 6-cylinder engines. It can be use on application from anywhere between 120 hp and over 200 hp.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
