This is the second set of photos of the new Audi supermini hot hatch has been spotted today. Unlike the previous prototype which was photographed with the newer 5-door Sportback body, this S1 is the classic 3-door, so it's being confirmed that both bodies are getting the "S" badge.
There are a lot of unknowns regarding the S1. For starters, the S1 is kind of a big deal in Audi's history, a name that needs speaks volumes for rally fans. Naming a supermini the "S1" is as strange as BMW Calling the 1-Series M Coupe the M1. Names like S A1 or A1 S could also be used in order to show respect to the iconic S1 of legend.

We're pretty sure that the S1 will be mechanically similar to the Polo R WRC, in that it will offer a 2.-liter TFSI engine with 220 PS and 350 Nm of torque. This is the same output as the you get with the Audi A4, for example, so engineers are already familiar with the setup.

From here on, things get a little tricky though: the Polo R WRC comes only with a manual, but Audi can and should offer a six-speed S tronic automatic since it's faster. Also, our spy photographers say the S1 is quattro, but other than the limited edition A1 quattro, there has never been a production car based on the PQ25 that offers all-wheel drive.

Should we be offended by a non-quattro S model? Well no, not when Audi has an S diesel. Adding quattro would also make this car heavy and very expensive. Speaking of price, the S1 should cost at least €32,000 in Germany, if not more.

If that troubles you, know that there's plenty of power to be had A1 1.4 TFSI with 185 PS, which is also very frugal thanks to twin-charger technology. Next year, the whole A1 family of models will receive an update. Look for a completely new set of headlights with a clean design, similar to the A4 facelift.
