Spyshots: 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Laps Nurburgring To Set 4-Cylinder Record

With Porsche currently keeping the 911 and the 2019 Cayenne under the spotlights, one could be forgiven for not discussing Zuffenhausen's mid-engined machines this fall. Nevertheless, if we zoom in on the prototypes being tested by the German automaker, we'll notice that the 718 Cayman is on its way to receiving a new range-topper, namely the GTS.

Back in July, we spied the 718 Boxster GTS blitzing the Ring and the time has now come for the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS to do the same.

Zooming in on the front and rear aprons of the test car, we notice the styling cues of the 718 Cayman S Sport Design package, which means we still have to wait for the visual elements that will set the GTS apart.

The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder heart of the sportscar is expected to jump from the 350 hp and 309 lb-ft output of the S model to about 375 hp and 330 lb-ft of twist. One of the most important changes will come from the exhaust, whose spicier tone is set to help purists get over the downsizing brought by the 718 generation.

Another important upgrade will come from the suspension, with the German engineers currently refining this side of the sportscar.

Of course, we can't discuss such a car without talking about the Ring number of the thing. The 718 Cayman GTS will go well below the 7:40 mark and is thus set to become the quickest four-cylinder production car on the Nordschleife - the Radical SR3 Turbo doesn't exactly qualify as a production vehicle.

It's the Porsche Week at the Nurburgring

This week might just go down in Nurburgring history as the Porsche week. And that's because the Germans have taken over the Green Hell. And, as you can imagine, the 911 is the star of the show.

No less than three incarnations of the rear-engined delight are doing their thing on the Ring. First and foremost, the 2018 GT2 RS is currently fighting to grab the production car lap record, with the wildest rumor out there talking about a 6:48.75 lap time.

Secondly, you shouldn't allow the amazing chronograph number of the twin-turbo animal to take you attention away from the 991.2 GT3 RS. Given how hardcore the revamped GT3 is, the Rennsport incarnation will be nothing short of a natural aspiration delight.

Then there's the next-gen Neunelfer, with the 992 Porsche 911 (the internal code hasn't been officially confirmed yet) also lapping the Nordschleife.
