Every time somebody mentions adding xDrive to the M5 or M6, BMW says that all-wheel drive is not for its ultimate performance cars… except for the X5 M and X6 M. It took them quite a while to realize X5 could be turned into a sportscar and by the time the M version came out in 2009, lots of sales had been squandered.
Not wanting to repeat their mistake, the Bavarians are putting a rush order on the next generation X5 M. Using the latest F15's architecture, M engineers have crafted a totally different type of vehicle, using keener steering, suspension and a familiar engine.
The same 560 hp mill from the M5 and M6 could be offered on the X5 M. This means a 5 hp increase and the potential for a keener Performance power pack.
Two test prototypes have been spotted in the wild, one black and one white. The only real difference between the two is that the black one uses non-M alloys, probably because engineers wanted a quicker tire change.
The overall look is somewhat similar to the X5 M50d that's already on sale, but there are subtle differences like bigger brakes, a quad exhaust system and different front air intakes.
