Ever since our Daimler source confirmed that Mercedes will give the world a V12-powered G-Class, we’ve been eager to meet the monstrosity in person. Thus, we sent our spy photographers out to hunt the car.
They came across two G-Class test vehicles, both using G55 AMG badges. Unfortunately, they couldn’t tell if they were really looking at the upcoming 2012 G55 AMG, which will use the new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 developing between 525 and 544 hp or at the beast they had been sent out for.
The prototypes come with generously-sized oil coolers, mounted on the front bumper, as well as with large drake rotors (the grey one rides on aftermarket rims, but this is not relevant).
The facelift for the G-Class will also bring us a few exterior changes, such a a redesigned front fascia with LED daytime running lights and new mirrors. We could meet the refreshed G-Class at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January.
