Spyshots: 2012 Mercedes B-Klasse

One of the models which will become a center point for German carmaker Mercedes-Benz, the B-Klasse, is getting ready for its next generation, with the test model getting in shape on the roads in Germany. And, according to rumors out there, this B-Klasse will say goodbye to the design cues, size and just about every single aspect which defined the B until now.

The reason behind the change of heart and a more hatchback approach for the B-Klasse is very simple: Mercedes wants younger buyers for the car. After all, they will not invest 800 million euros in Kecskemét, Hungary and another 600 million in the home facility in Rastatt just to sell a few units...

Back to the future model, it promises to be a force to be reckoned with in "this price-sensitive compact premium vehicle segment." The design changes, extensive as they are, are still hidden under the heavy layers of camouflage, hinting to a very exciting appearance when they will come off in autumn 2011.

As for the engines, the B-Klasse promises to be one of the most diverse models on the market. Aside for the regular petrol and diesel powerplants, the B will most likely get a hybrid version and a fuel cell powered one. Both are currently being tested by Daimler.

The future B-Klasse will come off assembly lines in Germany and Hungary alike. From the Kecskemét facility alone, the German carmaker plans to four A- and B-Klasse models, instead of the current two.
